Retrieve Backup in Zurich

Introduction

All files in the home directory in Zurich are backuped once a day and can be retrieved when something went wrong in the meantime.

Retrieve the backup for Thunderbird

When Thunderbird does not work anymore, the backup can be retrieved the following way:

Installed Versions

On lxplus, the installed version is 4.1.2, locally in Zurich, it is 4.4.1. This might make the portability of the code a bit more difficult, since the new gcc is more picky than the old one.

Get Rid of the Man Prompt

When ever you use `man`, it askes which version to show.
Most of the time this is annoying.
To define a default version put the following code into your config files

MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT=1
export MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT

setenv MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT 1

Overview

At the moment Gauss, Boole, Brunel, DaVinci and Panoramix are installed in Zurich. The versions can be checked at the software page. Note that this page may not always be up-to-date.

The normal chain is: Gauss -> Boole -> Brunel -> DaVinci (-> Panoramix)

You can configure python using a startup file. Python runs whatever file
the environment variable $PYTHONSTARTUP points to.

<http://docs.python.org/tutorial/interactive.html>

Example: History and Tab-Completion

create the file .pystartup

import atexit
import os
import readline
import rlcompleter

historyPath = os.path.expanduser("~/.pyhistory")
readline.parse_and_bind('tab: complete')

def save_history(historyPath=historyPath):

To have ROOT working on openSUSE and on the SLC5 machines,
you can set something like the following lines (this is for
a zsh!) in your startup files (e.g. zshrc for a zsh):

if [[ -f /etc/SuSE-release ]]; then

Common SVN Repository

Why?

SVN is a very useful tool for developing code.
So you should probably use it for your scripts as well.
The Physics Institute has an SVN server where Roland can create a repository for you.
But instead of everybody creating an own repository there is a common repository for the LHCb group.
This reduces the work Roland has to do and simplifies sharing code between members of our group.

tcsh as default shell

The default shell in Zurich is zsh. Unfortunately some of the control-keys do not work in zsh on SLC5 (e.g. grid-ui).
This can be fixed by using another tcsh as your shell. (If you prefer bash works as well.)

Before you change your default, you probably want to test the shell. Log into grid-ui and start tcsh
